Before You Hunt: Check Your Authorization and Local Rules

Review your license and harvest authorization, the deer management unit, legal hunting hours, and the rules that apply where you will hunt. Regulations for antlerless deer, baiting and feeding, and other restrictions can vary by location. Confirm the current rules using the Wisconsin DNR deer hunting page, rather than relying on a general checklist alone.

Hunting Wisconsin's Northwoods: Tree Stands and Still-Hunting

Drawing on deer hunting experience around Phillips, Wisconsin, MNOutdoorsMN covers two approaches that work well in wooded northern terrain: waiting from a tree stand and carefully still-hunting on foot. Neither approach guarantees success; changing wind, deer movement, hunting pressure and visibility all matter.

Tree Stand Hunting

Scout for deer travel corridors and likely movement routes before the season. Consider wind direction and a quiet approach to the stand. Use a properly fitted full-body fall-arrest harness and follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintaining continuous attachment while climbing and hunting. Inspect stands and climbing equipment before use, and never climb with a loaded firearm.

Still-Hunting

Move slowly, pause often, and scan ahead for shapes and movement. Plan your route with the wind and terrain in mind. Be especially careful about identifying your target and what lies beyond it; never shoot at movement or an indistinct shape. Know where other hunters may be positioned.

After the Harvest: Registration and CWD

Complete GameReg registration by the deadline, retain your confirmation number and follow safe meat-handling practices. Wisconsin DNR recommends CWD testing; consult current guidance on testing, carcass disposal and handling venison, particularly in areas where CWD is present.
